F10 530D SE March 2010
I was driving today for about an hour and the iDrive just started blinking. I had the sat-nav on with the automatic day/night detection selected. Even when I selected the main menu the blinking persisted. I stopped for lunch and after an hour I restarted the car and the blinking had stopped. I then drove for on for another hour and the bloody blinking had started again. When I say blinking I don't mean that the screen goes blank then reappears it is probably best described as the screen brightness adjusts itself momentarily between bright and dim every few seconds.

I just went back out and started the car again and it's not blinking now.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

You might want to check the screen and makes sure it's clean...no smudges, dust or fingerprints.

The screen is as clean as a whistle.
I can't imaging how dust or smudges would cause it behave in the way I described.

Sounds like some component within the display module is overheating and causing the blink you are describing. If you shut the car off to go to to lunch and it was fine when you came back it probably cooled off enough to work and it took an hour to overheat again.

Time for a service visit!

It is probably the "Light Sensor" playing up, this controls the brightness of the instrument panel lights.

What's the big deal? You've got a new F10 under warranty, just make a service appointment and tell them to fix it.

It would be a big deal to me. I enjoy buying a new car because I expect it to be free from defect and the distraction of having to return to the service department to fix things that shouldn't be broken.
