So I’ve been thinking about the possibility that I have a failed crankshaft sensor. Prior to this I would occasionally get a drive train malfunction when I stomped on it. Car would drive fine and no message after restart. Never a cel

When mine started acting up I would get nothing
Just the car acting strange then I got messages on the screen. I did a visual check of the engine and saw my problem
With BMWs you may not get a CEL but it definitely logs a message that you would only see by using ISTA, INPA or BMW specific OBD2 reader. Trust me your car is telling what's wrong you just have to hook up to it and and read the messages.

Ok cable arrived but when I google ISTA + I get all kinds of confusing information like ISTA P, ISTA D, rhienhold . And zip files. Is there a place I can learn how to do this or can someone I provide more detailed instruction? I assume I want ISTA d for diagnostics. Correct?
thanks,
jeff

I'm not understanding. The link was to a site. The first post had a PDF attached. Also on that site there is a thread specifically to request a download link. Also at the bottom of that same site is recommended reading. Everything is there for you to do anything you need to work on your car. Everything software you need with BMW is housed on MEGA cloud site. So if you don't have an acct you need one.
