Yea your not going to get what you need by checking codes that way. You either need a BMW specific code reader, INPA or ISTA. I can assure you there's more than what is being shown on the screen.

I understand. Where can I get that diagnostic reader? Had one on my laptop foe an e60 but it doesnt work for my f10. Recommendations?

If you had INPA all it needed was an update to use with F series. I always recommend ISTA with an ENET cable for troubleshooting. But you can get on Amazon and find a BMW specific for under $100.

I’ll still have the cable but the laptop it was on is fried . Can I download ISTANBUL from somewhere?

You'll need to get a ENET cable that F series uses. You have the cable for e series. You can download ISTA+ from online if you Google it. There's a site that gives you everything you need to get it going for free.

Can you see the crank shaft position sensor from the top of the engine bay?

Yea that cable is for E series. You need an ENET cable. The sensor sits under the starter.
