That's "old school" - very early run flat tires were fitted to special rims that prevented them from separating from the wheel at "0" pressure ... the newest are not. They probably like selling them because it means higher profits for them - same goes for repair vs sell new tires!
how would i tell if mine are the early wheel or not my car is a May 2005 model 525d E61 ?

I wasn't aware that any RFTs could be fitted on conventional rims - that's new news to me. The opposite is quite true though - I have OEM 17s and 18s meant for RFTs on which I run conventional tyres without issue. One set was fitted by a local tyre specialist and the other by the BMW dealer.
