Hmm.. did he replace the relay? Or why does he think it was the relay? If the compressor sums for 30 sec, then I would say the relay works as intended?

Usually the problem with the compressor appears and disappears for some time for no apparent reason, before it finally hits you and the rear remains sitting on the bumpstops. So I would be glad if the relay was the real problem, but I would not count on it just yet.

Ah, in that case i'll keep an eye on it....

He replaced the relay, i replaced the inlet pipe last week - after i changed the pipe, i only got the compressor to run once or twice (i was hoping the pipe fix was the problem)by putting weight in the boot.

+1

The replay function is to avoid the compressor to work permanently when there is air leaks on the pipes or when the compressor is damaged and takes longer to levelling the suspension. If it shuts the compressor after 30sec, then the relay is fully operational.

Hmmm, Is it possible to see the suspension rising upon putting weight in the back? I think some testing is in order....

yes its possible, but there's no point in testing it.
it may work ok today, fail tomorrow, and then run ok again the week after.

you can continue to use the car and if the problem occurs more often, just start searching for a cheap suspension compressor, so that you have it handy when you definitely need it.

Thanks MMitev - I jumped in the back last night and it made the usual noise, i think it lifted to a certain degree... but the warning light came back on the dash? Therefore I shall be taking your advice

I've found a unit, reconditioned! but it has no frame with the solonoids attached...do you think its worth checking mine first before buying a whole compressor?

First time I hear of a "reconditioned" unit. Not sure this will be reliable, unless whoever did it knows exactly what he was doing.. But I changed mine in Oct 2009, in the meantime someone might have learned how to repair them.

Checking yours: The only thing you can check is the pressure it generates. If its much lower than intended, its broken. A BMW dealer once told me the factory pressure was 15 atm., and mine was generating 1 atm.

Well its going back to the specialists to have a new light module coded (Halo's not working ) so i'll ask them to have another look at it.... I'm still in two minds as to whether i should buy this unit for £200 - seeing as i can get a full new unit off ebay complete with brackets and solonoids - my thinking with that is that i will be able to change it myself and i'll likely cure the issue.

As its level at the back now i think i can rule out the air bags, also relays changed....the only things im thinking now are the controller, solonoids or compresssor
