Hello

When I turn my steering wheel I hear a high tone noise.
The faster I turn the higher the tone.

Sometimes there is no noise but most of the time it's there!

Can it be solved by just changing the oil of the power steering or
is the problem bigger than I thought? :-(

I have had the rack replaced, new oil and the column lubricated to get rid of that noise. TBH I think it is a problem with the column, although I was on warranty so demanded that they did it all

 

Mine makes some noises at times too - occasionally a rather loud groan when it moves into and out of the memory position (when it tilts), and extremely rarely it groans a little when I turn during parking maneuvers. Everything I've read on this point to needing a new steering column, which is something of a maintenance issue with all used BMWs I've ever come across actually.

 

I had a slight whine from the steering mechanism at parking speeds in the winter. I was annoyed and read a lot on the topic. People first changed the fluid, then lubricated, and if that did not work, changed the steering rack and/or column. There was also a small bracket where the steering wheel is attached to the column which caused noise - it was lubricated and sometimes replaced.

However, before I had done anything at all, spring came and the noise simply disappeared

So my advice would be: before you do anything, try to diagnose the noise very precisely. If its nothing really dangerous, just leave it alone

 

Thanks for all your advice. Haven't done anything yet, to solve it. Next week the car goes in for
service and I hope the diagnose isn't to bad (expensive).

My car is out of warranty...
