So I did some searches, and it seems that people are really afraid of getting stuck with a flat tire (if they switched from RFs) without a spare, and BMW doesn't have a big enough compartment (at least my E61 doesn't) for a spare.
This might seem like a radical idea but ... what about hanging the spare tire from the ceiling of the trunk (in the E61). If someone could engineer some sort of bracket, but a tire tote on the spare and hang it from the ceiling. Although it would intrude into the rear view just a bit, its would be a pretty cool solution don't you think?

Non-RFT for both winter and summer, and I removed my spare.
Tow trucks have been invented...
I will probably regret posting that!

Unless you test your new hanging bracket in several high speed crashes, you may just end up with a major headache (when the bracket fails, and the tire whacks you and/or your passenger in the back of the head). Wait a minute, sounds like this situation has already happened to you!!
To all the people that think AAA/CAA and tow trucks are the "shit" ... if and when you get a flat tire, your main objective (as it should always be) is to keep going. Waiting for a tow truck, when sometimes you are in the middle of no where, and you have appointments and deadlines to keep ... is NOT an option. Change the tire or keep the RF and keep going.
My e61 does not have a spare tire recession. I have a small storage space, and if I read other post correctly (from my search) PDC, and two other module take up the space where the spare should be.
Many people on this site have talked about switching from RF to non-RF tires. When I bring up a valid point - that this is really a problem I get flamed for "wait for the AAA". Whether you like it or not, late BMW model have been designed with RF in mind. When someone brings up an arugment of switching to non-RF because of comfort and perfomance advantages, and at the same time, these people lose the concept of safety and convenience of driving after a flat ... IMO there is a problem when you cannot fit a spare in your fucking car (pardon my french).
My OP was intended as a brain storm of how to fix this problem. Too bad, no one has thought of a solution yet.

Good point, I didn't think of consequences due to safety.

life is short. Some get shot. (In Thailand, in Malaysia, ppl get bombed!) I dont know wht else will ppl do next?
sorry for OT
but over here, many of us driving non RF, will just take hv to depend on AAS (if overseas in Malaysia) or AAA, or tow-truck (if in Sin)
lastly, u can always keep stock a mobile gen tool kit.
otherwise, stick to RFT, though its costly.

- BMW Mobility Set, temporary repair of tyre with hole in it, EUR 91,-
- 17" (thin) Spare wheel incl. boot storage insert and jack, EUR 301,- (This means you lose the under-flooer storage area)
I am buying the BMW Mobility Set next week

Good idea re: the mobility kit.
And your price is 40 Euros cheaper than what it costs here from BMW...

If you open the trunk floor, then look under the next storage area, there should be the 17" spare in there.
I didn't think that I had a spare either (car came with stupid RFT), but there is a "space saver" spare tire in there. Or, there was.
Perhaps it is different with the 535xi.
WRT the rest of your post...
My tow truck comment was really aimed at myself, not at you. I replaced the RFT because the ride was horrible, and I am fine with taking the risk of also removing the silly spare. If I can't get the car moving after using the mobility kit, then it is tow truck or taxi time.
Confidence is high.

Are you sure about that?

Sorry for the strong flames the other day, da wife pissed me off just before I was replying ... tow trucks are cool, but I hate waiting for them.
I also heard that those "foam inflating" systems void your warranty on the tire.

Anyway, I keep a full size spare in the trunk of each of their American cars. It takes up some room, but I have a comfort level, and I suspect they do. I have never had to use a donut (because of my approach), and I have rarely used the full size spare. In an E61 series, couldn't you just keep your spare in the back and cover it with a sheet, blanket, etc? Heck, even a large piece of cardboard would work, spray painted black (86 cents at WM). (plus tax)
