.. can only chime in on what our Finnish friends have said; you're brought up with this climate so you learn to drive on slippery road pretty fast. In the old days Volvo's were only RWD so most drivers in Sweden learnt to cope with it. Today, many manufacturers have switched to FWD but that's purely from a cost perspective and has nothing to do with the Nordic climate...
I was out driving today with the family and I remarked to my wife how easy it is to drive a RWD now with all the electronics.

ps. there's a reason the Nordic countries are good at rallying... i.e. driving side ways and slippery surfaces
