E6x 530d M57TUD30 Timing Chain Issues
Hi All
Last week my engine started making a very laud tapping/knocking sound. Exactly like this (although not my car):
I took of the valve, and after locking the flywheel with the locking tool at TDC for cyl 1., I found that the cams where not timed correct. It looks like 10-20 degrees off. So probably the noise comes from a piston hitting a valve - urgh!
I am speculating if the cause for the mistiming is because the timing chain has jumped one or a few taps. Maybe due to a bad chain tensioner. I can only inspect the upper chain from the top, which looks fine (no apparent wear or loose in any way). The lower one, may be the culprit.
Anybody with similar experience? From what I can tell, the engine will have to be removed from the engine bay, and stripped down, top off etc. in order to get to the chain and tensioner.
Any input would be appreciated - primarily if someone else has experienced a similar problem?
Thanks,
