I don't know what you guys do with your cars ! My E61 535d has 175,000 miles (280,000 kms) and since the warranty ran out in May 2008 (intake manifold under warranty) my 'non-service' bills have been :

bulbs - c. ?10
Rear Pads & Sensor c. ?50
Tyres - 6 @ c. ?180 each

Purchase cost was around ?42,000 new, worth about ?8k now, so excluding service items & fuel, it's so far cost me 19pence per mile - probably the 'cheapest' and most reliable car I've ever owned - can't afford to mess about with unreliable cars with my commute of 400 miles each way to work.

Having said that, something big is bound to fall off / break next time I get in it now :-)
!!

Same with our E60. We're at 190k km's now (have it since new), and it's by far the most reliable car we have owned!

400 miles each way !?

374 each way to be precise - and the odd jaunt to our head office in Thisted in the furthest reaches of your country.

I don't travel to work every day

My Ride: BMW E61, Nov-2005. M-steering wheel +sport seats. Panoramic roof, Lighting package, Xenon, Adaptive headlights, Prof. navigation, CD changer, Voice control, Bluetooth, Heated seats, 128 alloys -18 inch, B&W Tuning (hounslow)

Bought my 525d Touring from Nov-05 with approx 112000 Km. Current mileage is 165000 KM
Major Issues so far were:
Replacement of Turbo and intake manifold (goodwill from BMW but still cost me ?850 on labour). Turbo started whisteling continiously and according to BMW had to be replaced.
Also I had to replace the compressor for the self leveling suspension which unfortunately is a commonly known issue. My previous car which was an Alfa 166 had the airco compressor replaced.
So from my experiece I always feel that in general compressors (incl. turbo) are the weakest links and expensive to replace. Other than that no serious issues (ok my steering wheel squeeks sometimes and the panoramic sunroof is wind noisy when closed). And as a general comment I think the torque below 1500 RPM is disappointing even after a remap done. Especially for a sportive car like the BMW. My alfa 166 2.4 jtd was more powerful in that perspective with only 5 cilinders. But other than that a very nice and comfortable drivers car.

Hi

I bought my 530d at 120.000kms, now at 130.000kms. Repair bill ain't small...

AC evaporator thingy behind dash (dash out repair...?2500)
PDC sensor (?200)
Charging cable module thingy incl. diagnostic (?550)
Rear levelling compressor (?900)
Rear wheel bearing (?300)
One new headlight (secondhand, did the work myself...?400)

Curently in shop to do the air compressor, rear wheel bearing and oil change, and of course the took it apart before realising they didn't have the parts for the rear wheel bearing...

Also need another headlight...

some of the repairs have gone on sellers warranty (AC+rear level compressor) so my bill stands at ?1450 but have managed to get BMW to pay for some of it because they tend to screw up (like current situation...). So total out of pocked expense is around ?1200. That is a lot for a car that is 4 years old I think.

I don't dare think what is next after sellers warranty runs out...but crossing my fingers I've coverd most of the usual stuff...

I will buy a second car anyway come spring, which means I can do some repairs on my own as I don't have to rely on a functioning car...it is sad to have to think that way but I can't really afford a brand new vehicle, so there are compromises, and this is the only one.

Ok, I have 95,000 miles on my '05 530i. The only thing I replaced was a set of tires, brake pads and rotors, and a light bulb or two. Still rides and drives close to new! Am I just darn lucky, or is it time to sell? I still love this car.

There's a Swedish saying that goes something like "Healthy keeps quiet". You're probably more inclined to post if something goes wrong that if everthing's ok.

I'm very happy with my car and after the initial problem as reported on this forum the car has been running, running, running...

55.000 kms and still feels like new.

Just chiming in on this post. I got a 2006 530xiT after many years with Acura, Audi and Porsche's. The amount of electrical non-sense has been off the chart. It's gone through 5 computers in the last 6 months, and at 40K it went in for electrical issues to be gone for 6 weeks. I love so much about the car, but I'm afraid of it breaking and that sucks for a daily driver. In reading this thread it would seem that these experiences are not unique.
