Just bought an E61, found rust on the tailgate. Looking for corrosion warranty advice
Hi everyone.
I bought an E61 sight unseen (but with a Lemon Squad inspection, which turned out to be pretty much worthless). The inspector completely missed a quarter sized rust spot on the tailgate, right below the rear window. I've done some research and it appears this is fairly common, but I've seen mixed things about getting this fixed under BMW's corrosion warranty. My car is a 2010, so I'm still under the warranty. Does anyone have any tips for getting this work approved? I'd love to not have to pay out of pocket. The car was a one owner with a clean carfax, if that matters. Thanks!

And usually manufacturers warranty only covers rust if it becomes a hole. At that point you will have to wait years to MAYBE get it.
Its very common on BMW tail gates even on super clean rust free cars (just design issue). Your best bet is to dremel down the rust and use some BMW touch up paint for now. That'll stop it where it is. You can get it paint blended or the whole tailgate sprayed if you are pickier. Also I would get the car(or at least the tail gate) sprayed in an oil overcoating(inside it) to help and get it sprayed on the area where the seal is below the rear glass window
