Im fascinated to know how you got MP3 on your 2005 car! I have one with Media pack and MP3 doesnt seem to work!
I think it is just a software update to get the in dash CD to play MP3, the changer is another matter.

MP3 playback is not possible on an early 2005 E61 with media pack without having your dealer enable/add some software. IIRC BMW say that MP3 playback from the in-dash CD can be enabled on cars with the CCC (you will have this as you have Pro Sat Nav as part of the UK media pack) built after 03/2005. Despite this myself and others on this forum have had success in getting their dealers to enable MP3 on earlier cars MP3 - my E61 was built 01/2005 and plays MP3 just fine. In summary, I would recommend that as a first course of action you talk to your dealer about them enabling MP3.

I do not believe it is possible to get the glove-box mounted changer to play MP3. I seem to recall that question being asked on this forum before - maybe do a search for more info.

My 535d Touring was built in Jan 05. I purchased it (new, but showroom stock) in May 05. It had the full media package (prof nav, bluetooth etc...) but no voice at all. I tried for over a year to get Carrs, Bury ST Eds, to fit. First they said 'not possible', then they said may be possible, but over ?800.

Lind, Norwich have now done mine & GIzzE's car (at least). I have the 'latest version' which has clever bits like the computer being able to verbalise the names on your sim card. The Menu button is now split Menu/voice and I suspect theres an extra mic in the roof.

The total cost was ?201 + VAT (give or take ?10 either way) - there was no other work done on my car but they did say that my car needed 'a shed load' of updates - which were, of course, done.

Only other cost was the courtesy car @ ?15 per day - a paltry 116i - but still drifted roundabouts well if you kept the revs up.
I've just called Peter Vardy in Edinburgh and they insist I need two "parts" - ?50 for a physical part and nearly ?200 for an "Activation Code". Their total price is around ?600.

Before I call Lind (in Norwich) can anyone who had it done there, confirm what parts they paid for?

I am getting really wound up here - it may even be worth a trip to Norwich - any recommendations on what to do whilst I wait

elmbeck : your dealer seems to quote the correct parts and procedure. However the Activation Code is free from BMW, what they are charging you for is the software update time. There again if you have something that 'needs' a software update then it can be done together and free. Again bundling items that need a software update together gives you considerable savings.

I did the voice upgrade and the aux install together. All I paid for was the parts and the install charges as per the SIBs and nothing else. Infact I argued (and won) that the Aux and Voice together should qualify for cheaper install than the sum total time because of the same parts being opened up. This way,as I've mentioned this several times, my retrofits worked out cheaper than the Factory installs. I think BMW have probably worked that one out by now and hence your quotes.

BM

To resurrect an old thread. I can confirm this Activation code has been quoted at me as well. Circa ?200 for an email or whatever for an activation code. HELLO???

In summary, ?60 for parts, **?200 for activation code**!!!???!!!!, fitting 1.5hrs @ ?150 / hour plus a recode at ?150. All plus the dreaded. I am used to BMW taking the p1ss, but this has to be the mother of all p1ss takes does it not?

I cannot see ANYBODY paying this price for this kit if true. I was planning on fitting the kit myself, and am due to have the car coded anyway, so in reality it would cost me ?60+VAT extra if it were not for this activation code.

Can anybody else confirm that the activation code charge is in fact correct or is my dealer as ever wrong?

The activation code is definately needed but as mentioned it used to be free, if BMW have now started charging for that then its a different issue. As mentioned I got the Voice Input retrofitted cheaper than the factory option.

Hi Pharoah

If you add mine up it is ?635 + Vat i assume yours are + vat as well. So it seems that is the 'going rate' **!!???**. The ?250 i was referring to the extra cost for me, if i were to install the hardware myself, prior to getting the car software updated which i am booked to have done anyway to try to bluetooth my Iphone more sucessfully.

So i was just trying to ascertain if my dealer is in fact correct. I would also like to know if even for ?250 + vat this is worthwhile on a 2004 car? Is the system very useful or is it a bit of a waste of money?? Comments from users very welcome please.

I got my Aux retrofit and Extended Voice Retrofit both installed with the parts and software done at Synter BMW High Wycombe for less that ?250. Having said that I had to tell them what to do with the Voice bit because my car was the first one that they did, apparently.
