My highest ever is 27mpg on highway with empty car driving around 75-80mph for over 2 hours.
In 50/50 city/highway cycle driving to work I get 21 mpg consistently with my new 19" wheels (OEM style 128)
Before 19" wheels with my stock 17" wheels I was getting 22mpg on the same cycle

This is at 1 mile above sea level on 91 octane, which reduces mpg even further.

e61 520d. Just got 41.5mpg on 2 300 mile trips, towing a glider trailer (with glider in it) mostly at a legal 60 mph indicated.

After sorting my engine issues out.... town driving is between 23-25mpg, countryside driving (av 60mph) gets me between 34-38mpg depending how I drive (thats reseting the clock once the engines warm.

I think the mway is about the same, in the 36-38 figure....

I would suggest posting figures from a round trip, as terrain incline can have a huge effect, i.e. consumption TO the seaside or FROM the seaside.

Best I've achieved on a round trip of ca. 400 km with some city driving (at start and destination), two persons and some luggage, and average speed 80 km/h (B-roads):
34.5 mpg (US)
41.5 mpg (UK)

That's 530dAT with 218 PS, no remaps.

With my (newly acquired) 530xdAT (yes, the x-drive), I've just gone on a 1,200 km round-trip (Geneva > Stuggart and back) and got 7.3 (Ltrs/100kms). Around 140km/h in Switzerland and up to 230km/h on the German autobahn. If I had taken any of my other cars, I'd have been up in the 12-15(Ltrs/100kms) range so am VERY please with the result. Extremely comfortable also. I'm also of the opinion that to get better than 6.2 (i.e. in the 5's) would be next to impossible in the 530d Touring.

7.3 is a great consumption. Does this include entry/exit from the city areas, and is this just the BC figure, or did you measure the real consumption by topping up the fuel?

On my trip above I had real 6.8 L/100km, so yours is a great consumption considering the x-drive and the much higher speeds.

The facelifted cars are also much more economical due to the improved automatic.

This includes entry and exit from cities plus some slower driving (100km/h) during some of the roadworks on the autobahn. The average over 100 km's or so of autobahn was probably around 180km/h. Once back in Switzerland, it dropped back to around 140 since I have a Swiss driving licence and 30km/h over any limit is automatic ban. Moreover, they have a lot of stretches and tunnels around main cities like Zurich/Bern/Yverdon/Lausanne which are 100km/h limit (and there are lots of camera's in the tunnels)!

The consumption was from the BC; frankly, this is a good enough indicator for me. In my Volvo, other BMW or 911, I'd have used twice the petrol, especially on the autobahn, so given + or - 0.2 in consumption terms is not going to make me feel any different overall

I keep a record on consumption and just divide that with how far I have been driving when the year runs out of dates.

For 2010: 9.6 lit/100 kms, 2011: 9.5 lit/100 lms and currently 9.4 lit/100 kms. Nice trend!

Best so far was a fully packed car (5 persons with luggage) just cruising along in the countryside; 7.7 lit/100 kms.

This is the best way to measure it. I have 9.8 l/100 since March 2010, but this includes quite a lot of congested city driving with consumption around 11.5.

Re difference between BC and real consumption: the error I have measured hasvery often been above 0.5l, and in some cases above 1.0l. It depends on how old the car is, if it has any problems with the engine (known or unknown), the driving style (the more "erratic" and with changing pace, the less reliable the BC is) and if anyone has played with the calibration of the BC consumption indicator before. That said, if the car is relatively new, there shouldn't be that much of a difference.
