The USB interface should power down when the car goes into sleep mode. Sleep mode occurs when the car hasn't been touched for about 16 minutes. Keep in mind that opening a door will wake the car up so if you plan on testing things out, you can leave your iPod where it will be visible from the car's exterior. (You can leave a window down to help you peek at things after you've waited for the sleep mode to kick in.)
Since you provided the open window tip, any suggestions on how to make sure that the refrigerator light actually goes out when the door is closed?

According to the owner's manual (at least the US owner's manual), the USB inteface supports .MP3, .WMA, .WAV (PCM), and .AAC...
