Drove the SL65AMG this morning. It is a beast! Unfortunately the pavement was not dry so it was hard keeping the wheels planted, but I got the point. I have not driven an M5, but suspect I would prefer it to the SL. It felt like a heavy car, not the feeling I am used to with my 550 or the e46 M3.

Darkside mate , hi ! sorry to be OT , but i wanted to ask you what you felt like going from e46 m3 to 550i ? ive sold it (the m3)and am planning to get an m5 but the money isnt really coming that easy , so it would most probably have to be the 550i ... Can you please tell me (if you want thru PM) what your experiences are with the car... i mean is it really powerfull enough coming from the light nimble m3 ?

I am asking because i had a loaner 545i and although quicker than my 745li i didnt find it to be anywhere as responsive to the accelerator once pushed! is the 550i a different experience, or do you find it lacking power in comparison to the ultimate machine ?

BTW mine is a may 03 built e46 m3 coupe with SMG

btw two really great cars in the picture !

700700,
My M3 was also an 03 SMG. I am finding the 550 a really different experience. This car has torque and will push you back in your seat right at the beginning of the rev range. I doubt the 0-60 is much off that of my M3, and I know the 60-100 is much faster. The 5 series does not give the feeling of being on rails or absolute confidence or the steering feel of the M3. But it is soooooo much more comfortable, has a usable rear seat, and I'm loving all of the electronics. And once you get used to it you can really toss it around.
I really needed a car my wife would drive, and she would not drive the SMG. I'm sure I'd love the M5, but from what I have heard it is not as comfortable an all around car as the 550i. In summary, I am happy for now. It is possible I will get another M, but it would be an e90 M3 I suspect.
