We may have to go with European times (if they can begot) versus USA times what with the crippled LC and all.

Nope a deals a deal. I have seen some European times, particularly German, but I know nothing about the mags. One mag's results were, IMO, way too fast for both cars tested. Go to BMW Germany; find the mag tests for both the M5 and M6; and see what you think. Doing these things is a lot easier if you know German--which I don't. Once you get to the tests you can usually figure out what the values given mean. And, you could use a language translator obviously. But, also, the European mags give 0 - 62 and don't give 1/4 results.

Yep, so far here's what's been posted: (I can't verify these numbers).

0-60 4.2
0-100 9.4
0-150 20.7

I'm eagerly awaiting my subscription issue. Anyone seen the magazine yet?

Bimmer32 117 (Tie for Second--6)
Stream 116.40+ (Third--5)
vnod 115 (Tie for Fifth--3 )

Ranking to Date:

1. m5lover = 7 + 5 + 7 = 19
2. Centurion = 5 + 7 + 6 = 18
3. Wolverine = 7 + 6 + 4 = 17
4. Bimmer32 = 7 + 4 + 6 = 17
5. Stream = 6 + 6 + 5 = 17
6. vnod = 6 + 7 + 3 = 16
7. cobradave = 6 + 5 + 3 = 14

It's looking pretty nippie and tuckie right now. A couple of very bads hurt several of the quesstimators. Eventually, I may have to work out a penalty for being too far away from a given C&D result--because ocassionally a far-away score looks too high resulting from ties among the other quesstimators.

Finally, each of the above will receive at least a BMW merit badge. But, especially given the M5's "peers" and nonpeers listed above, the first one that says "yeah, but the M5 is about way more than just acceleration" gets a demerit.

I know the new M5 blows the doors off the E55... but wow C&D managed to get 4.3 for the E55? Crazy... I guess from 0 to 60 the E55 can keep up... but after that I KNOW its

I had a W211 E55 in 2003 and believe me when I tell you it was scary quick. Huge amounts of torque at very low RPMs (516 lb/ft starting at 2,650 RPM), and a very fast auto gearbox (as auto gearboxes go). I sold it after 4 months because the handling was terrible, the road feel was numb and the brakes were horrible--and I'm interested in an all around performer, not just the quickest car off the line.

As an all around car, defined by the full range of performance (quickness, handling, road feel, etc.), there's no doubt that the E60 M5 (even though I haven't driven one yet...) is the superior car, but since this thread is about quickness, I think you'd be sorely disappointed if you think the E60 M5 would blow the doors off a W211 E55 in a straight line race--at any speed.

I'm not one for racing, but with the E55 you were a target for every racer boy wannabe, and on a few occasions I couldn't resist , and I spanked a Porsche 996 Turbo from a standstill, and a 360 Modena on a highway from 100 MPH+, to name a few.

But but but... THEY said...

Well M5board put out a few vids and there was one with a Tuened E55 against the new M5 and both times the E55 lost... so *shrugs* I still think the M5 would be faster than the W211 E55... I know the E55 is scary fast... but its hard to believe the M5 isnt faster.
I have those vids, and I'm pretty sure it was a stock E55 sedan. Don't you find it curious that when they raced the M5 against the E55 (but not the other cars), they used a rolling start?
Good point--so the evidence to date suggests.

I'll guess for the E60 M5, the BEST times reported by one of the three carmags will be:

0-60 4.2
1/4 mile 12.2 @ 120

I'll bet I'm withing a tenth on the times, and 1 mph on the best quarter mile speed. I'm basing this on all the Euro testing that's already been done, with the understanding that the US testers sometimes abuse the car a bit more...
I'll take that bet (now).
