Here's my theory:
BMW's typically cost less than Merc's on a model-for-model basis.
i.e. 325 is less than a C240, 330 is less than a C320, 530 is less than an E320, 545 is less than an E500, etc. etc.
As a fairly good example; my 545's US MSRP was around $64k, a comparably equipped E500 has an MSRP of $71k, roughly 11% more.
I priced out an AMG E55 with options that have historically been standard on the M5, like navigation; and adding options that are standard on all 5er's, like bluetooth with voice control (NAV Pro is assumed standard in the US). The E55 priced out at around $85k. If we are to assume that this roughly 10% "Merc Premium" also holds for the M and AMG models, that means that the M5 (with no options) should run around $77k. That represents a 10% increase over the $69k base price of the E39 M5, and is also roughly in line with the increases that we saw in the E39 to E60 transition.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. This little analysis also only applies to the US market.
Absolutely; probably around $1300 or so. Not as bad as the $2500 GG tax on the Bentley Arnage T I saw yesterday, but still pretty steep.

I would imagine that there would be a gas guzzler tax for that beast as well???

That's why BMW is better, Cheaper than Benz when it's new, and hold up much better value when the car is used. You can easily find a 2002 C320 for $20000 and the 330I is still around $23000.

Going to get hit with that on a 645 I ordered. It's disturbing how SUV's and trucks don't seem to get hit by this with the majority being used as daily drivers.
At least there's no longer a luxury tax....

I do agree with your basic assumptions though, the BMW will be priced comparably to it's MB competition, possibly a little bit less. By the time the M5 is released, the competition (the CLS55) will be priced in the mid $90K range. My guess for the last year has been $85K base, with options etc., it will be close to $100K.

How is the M5's competition the CLS55 and not the E55? In my opinion, the M6 is positioned perfectly against the CLS55.
I don't see where there's $15k worth of options to put on the vehicle. ACC ($2200), LOGIC7 ($1800), Comfort Seats ($1200), CWP ($700). If you look at the old M5, almost everything was standard. Now, when you add sales tax and GG Tax, you're getting up there, but I took those out, since all the cars we're talking about are subject to them.
BMW's are consistently roughly 10% cheaper than Benzes. Given that, I just priced out what a comparable E55 is to what I assume will be a base M5 (since Merc nickle and dimes you worse than BMW) and took 10% off of it.
It's all moot to me, though, since there's no chance that I can afford $80 large for a car; and I'm waiting for the E90 M3.

I bet we will see some stealers try and sell them for 110 (and prolly get it).
A maxed out 545 is around 77k MSRP, so there has to be some diff above that. 85k would be at least 20k over a basic 545.
It's possible the base on the M5 might be even higher, say 90k. Alot will depend on production allocation (# of units) in the first year. Supply and demand. Simple economics - and marketing!
