Hi. Im Thinking about getting an M5, but i have serious doubts about the gearbox.

So, Tell me, and please be honest ; How is the M5 to drive around town ?

Will it jerk and be as awful as i suspect ?

Like a true manual, if you drive it well, it will be smooth. If you don't it will be pretty ugly.

I found it takes just a few days to master SMG, but it takes a few months for it to become second nature so you don't have to think about it. Having driven the car for over 31,000 miles, I can say it is now smoother than a manual, but not as smooth as an automatic.

For 2007, you can purchase the car with a manual transmission - so it will shift as smooth as your skill allows.

I test drove one yesterday in downtown Denver. I would think the paddles would get tiring over time, but its so fun to drive the car, I don't think it would matter. I only had it for 40 minutes, but it was SOOO fun to drive around town. GO FOR IT!

It would appear so. The demand for a 6speed manual was from the M5 enthusiasts Stateside and BMWUSA accommodated their wishes.

Using paddles round town is fine & easy to get used to.

Downshifts under throttle give a great & noisy blip which is fun for pedestrians.

The SMG M5 aint the best car round town, but it does the job well.
