For some reason, magazines usally compare the CLS to the M5. Maybe it is because that is the latest competitor in the Benz lineup. From there you can go on and compare the CLS to the E55. In the end, most people reach the conclusion that the Benz has better low end torque, but the M5 feels more like a sports car. Here are a few magazine pages:

e55 amg is quite different to the cls 55 amg... i mean the steering rack, the brakes and so on are better on the cls ...

so if you were comparing:
m5 and e55 i would definitely say the m5 is better
m5 and cls 55... damn i cant say

and when the cls63 amg comes, it will be bye bye m5

These data are as good as I can do right now.

Straight Line:

Mercedes E55 AMG RT 6/03 4.20 12.40 116.40
Mercedes E55 AMG CD 5/03 4.30 12.50 116.00
BMW M5 CD 1/06 4.20 12.50 118.00
BMW M5 MT 3/06 4.80 12.90 114.90

At the ring:

8:13 BMW M5 (E60) 500 PS
8:28 BMW M5 400 PS
8:50 Mercedes Benz E55 AMG

Every report I have ever read comparing the M5 to a "comparable" AMG has concluded that the M5 is the better driver's car, while the AMG is more of a decent twisty-handling easy rider.

I still think the CLS55 AMG is a stunning car.

Ordered one last year, but decided the cost was too high, depreciation would be too much & was far slower than my RS6. Still now i'm driving a DMS 535D so i do tned to change my car buying criteria quite often.

I've got my eye on that 63 AMG as well, but I think the price isn't going to take the outgoing model's price. I'm thinking their base model will be at six figures in N. America.

The M5 is a much better car than the E55 AMG. Even thou CLS is a good looking car I would still stick with the M5. Before ordering my 530 I considered the CLS 350 very seriously but after test driving the CLS I fell in love with the E60.
