So illegal overhere
In the US, its our constitutional right (first amendment) to freely receive any and all radio transmissions. Another defense is that we as citizens should be able to know if we want when we are under surveillance.

I just love the US of A's constitution - in a way.

Still have a copy of the old original one in frames hanging in the hall!

But the fact is that everyone is now under more surveillance than ever.

Passport 8500 X50, it has been VERY effective. If you get away from the cities, California has a lot of open space. A radar detector can come in VERY handy covering a long distance.

V1 - I especially like its ability to tell me the direction from which the signal is coming.

A V1 if you want the worst customer service in the world and a lot of false alarms.

The Radar gun that the cops use transmit most of the radiation, they send a radio wave or lazer out onto traffic and the signal then bounces off the cars and returns to the cops radar/lazer gun to calculate how fast you are going. A Radar/Lazer detector just reads the radio wave that is being generated by the cop, it generates very little on its own and only enough to increase its sensitivity to incoming radar/lazer.
And in addition, the V1 uses a metal case (most/all others use plastic) which shields most of the RF radiation created by the internal oscillators. It sheidls it so well, that the V1 is very nearly (not totally) undetectable by radar detector detectors that are used by police in areas where radar detectors are illegal.
