No worries, that's what this forum's for

Here's a link to the DIY on the V1 hardwire. Since you have a newer model, I would be careful regarding tapping into the correct power-wire. Scroll to the last few pages of the thread regarding the LCI-related power issue and finding the correct wire, http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=708&

If you can find the right wire, you should have no problem with this DIY
+1 Do the hardwire, it'd look so much cleaner.

Well lets just say I hate buying things on a whim

Sorry if I caused any problems. At least new prospect buyers will get a kick out of reading this thread

Question: Does anyone know if the 8 ft long straight wire is long enough to wrap around to the passenger side power outlet?
I don't think it will be.. I'm not too good with messing with electrical stuff so not sure if I can hardwire this. Bah I'll just do a search.
Congrats on your decision. You probably already know this but I think you made the right one (and, to make things even better, it was the less expensive choice!)

I don't think you caused any problems here and I hope you realize that everyone here was trying to help you out -- more than likely some things got lost in translation and tempers began to flare.

As far as the length of the wire, no worries -- Valentine designed the unit to accept a regular telephone line cord (the wire between the wall and the phone, not the one between the phone and the handset) so you can get a longer wire just about anywhere or make a custom one if you have the proper crimping tool. Now how cool is that? (I even keep a spare phone cord tucked in the tool kit just in case something happens to my regular V1 coiled cord.)

Good luck with your new toy and, as others have said, be careful with it. Detectors do not make you immune to tickets, especially if you do not have much experience using them. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes getting a ticket or two to gain that valuable experience...

I believe it needs the ones with 4 wires not 2

I think you're correct but surprisingly, the V1 website doesn't get that specific:
http://www.valentine1.com/Moreinfo/p...cords_pg20.pdf

Usually, if you buy a cable at a store, there are 4 wires. The ones that come packed in the box with single-line phones usually only have the two.

Either way, it's a simple, elegant solution that Mike Valentine came up with...

Thanks Rudy. I saw the DIY on the hardwire setup but I don't have the stomach to rip open anything in my car yet.
I think I'll go the safe route by tucking in the cords in the headliner and running it under the floor carpet into the passenger side power outlet.

I'm assuming the part that plugs into the unit and the cigerette lighter accepts the plug from the telepone wire? I don't want to splice up wires and reconnect it.

Hardwire the V1, like the rest of us did. Much, much easier. Congrats on the V1. You should have gone with the Passport though.

Exactly. That's why I said it was such an elegant solution. The V1 and the power adapter have female RJ-11 sockets so the phone wire plugs right into both of them...

Too bad I missed this thread.

1) The V1 is the superior product
2) You can adjust the V1 sensitivity, I run it in L mode vs A to limit the amount of false alarms.
3) The V1 is $100 more but you get more mounting options/power taps that cost extra on the Escort. The price difference is really about $20.
4) Ability to upgrade the V1 firmware for a nominal fee
5) Stealth display ... get it.
6) Check Ebay, auto forums for private sales, or get a V1 remanufactured unit if you want to save $$$.

Once you have the arrows you will understand how useful they are.
