Will it be possible, in your opinion ?

It would be cool have it retrofitted on our pre-LCI 5 series ...

So far it appears to be a resounding no, you can not install the USB input in a pre-LCI. But I'm sure that's not going to stop a few from trying and I'm sure everyone will be curious to see who tries it first.

It's going to be a combination of hardware and software that allows this to work. If the USB port has the hardware and software to convert the files it reads from the mass storage device to normal audio then sure its possible. However this is very unlikely and most probably all the processing is being done at the CCC itself. Now here again if its merely enabled via a CIP upgrade then its again possible but it seems to me that pre-LCI CCCs are already being pushed to the limit in terms of processing power so I think BMW may have upgraded the CCC themselves. If that is the case its going to be an expensive retrofit. However time will tell....

Just think about a simple function that we wants here: mirror folding function. It cannot be done merely by using "Retrofit", but it has to go through Vehicle Order route. If you have the right connection w/ dealer, it'd be done, but not easy here in US.
If we have connection with dealer to get VO easily, we can virtually retrofit ANYTHING from comfort seat to the folding function.

One more thing to remember about USB for LCI is that its CCC is totally different from what pre-03/07 cars, so the chance to retrofit USB onto pre-03/07 is very slip.
I might be wrong, but someone has a better knowledge should chime in inform us better

If we have connection with dealer

Understood : I am already mailing the most skilled technician of the dealer to ask a new CCC under warranty
"Dear X, in next few months I need a new CCC : you can choose what to say to BMW for having it "

Ihihi!
