Greetings Guy's,

I too am planning to purchase a radar detector, due to the introduction of penalty points and Penalty related insurance hikes here in Ireland.

However I could not handle having a load of wires and suckers all over my car. Not to mention the fact that these systems are completely illegal in Ireland.

That said I need a reliable unit with the sensor mounted behind my bumper, no cable in my cigarette lighter and the main unit to be hiden in the cabin, but visable and audible to myself.

So which make and model do I need?

Thanks

Grinche

With the speed police ever clamping down here in the UK, I'm tempted to buy a radar/laser detector - question is, are they worth it?

I'm looking at http://www.radarbusters.com/products/escort/solo_2.asp as I like the cordless operation; other than that maybe a valentine 1?

Do other owners use these things, and what sort of success rate do you get?

cheers

I have a cordless whistler...dunno the model. It's very effective on highways, but in city it gives alot of false alarms. Got it over a month now and it avioded 2 tickets.

Cool man you "speeder" just jokin' that is why you have a diesel monster under the hood

yeah but here in this part of EUROPE it is not allowed it is damn stupid!

Romania, Hungary, Czech Rep, yes Germany, Belgium no....

Didn't know you needed a radar detector in romania, hungary etc. - do they actually pulll you over for speeding? Spent 2 months in Germany (speeding everywhere),met with members of the bmw na club while I was out there, none of the members had even thought of buying radar.

Another thing, don't have diesal, but I heard it rocks. Especially with gas prices.

Yes but I refered to "bettermakehisway".. he is from Ro, and yes they pull you off the road and sometimes you can manage with some 100s of euros but if you find a hard-necked, you are in trouble. In Germany I also speed a lot but oly where is allowed.

Yes...they pull you over alot in Romania. Especially if your in bad luck and meet a mobile radar. You can manage most of the time with the equivalent of 20 euros or so. Unless you are really speading (like tripe the law speed) and of course you either get banned for 3 months or be prepared to throw at least 100 euros.
Yes it is illegal but hey i don't see the logic, if the radar detector has vg2, they can't detect it, so...if there is a radar i'll get noticed so i'll slow down and they won't pull me over to see my detector.....except the only way is to get pulled over from no-where and be caught off guard with the radar in my windshield...

One guy told me that the V1 is also the best but it's kind of huge...3-4 times the size of a conventional radar.

If you want the best. Buy a Valentine One (V1). Check out their website: www.valentineone.com

Cordless models may be convenient; however, I have heard that they are not as effective as models that have a continuous 12V source. Just what I've heard.

Good Luck with your selection.

V1s are not all all huge, but a bit larger than the other "standard" sized ones.

If you come to Houston, Texas, leave your radars at home. Police use lasers here and they'll snip you. By the time your Laser dectector notifies you, you're catch. Now your dectector will detect traces that the police is pointing at other cars in front of you, but of course, you can see that visually. By the way, it's instant ON Laser that these cops use.

Guys that work in traffic control management are "trained" to be able to see which car is speed, so don't argue or ask for evidence. They have the right to not show you until court time (who has time for that). My brother works in this division.

I don't know too much about radar/laser detection, but V1's have laser detection and are very sensitive when it comes to detecting radar, in general, and instant on specifically. Still, laser or instant on are difficult to deal with.

I second all the comments about V1. The directionality is great, as is the "counter" so when you repeatedly pass familiar places with, say, 2 burglar alarms that set it off, and one day you see 3, maybe it's police radar. And V1 has laser detection but as another poster stated, with either instant-on radar or laser, your only hope is to spot the cop with your eyes and hit the brakes before he or she hits the button, though I had a weird experience with laser recently that seemed contrary: laser warning, braked and looked up at the overpass, saw the cop, saw him careen down the on-ramp in my rear-view mirror, went 55 in the right line, and he passed me and pulled over a guy I had passed shortly before. Did I mention I was speeding? But I'm sure I just got lucky; maybe the guy I passed was really coming up faster and was the target, and I just got the scatter rays.
Good luck to all!!

From what I've been reading, you're 100% correct - if your unit is picking up a signal aimed directly at you, it's probably too late ; however picking up "scatter" can be a useful warning!

Try a passport SR-7
http://www.passportsr1.com/sr7.htm

This is expensive, but in 10,000 miles of driving I have no speeding tickets.

It is installed in the front and back of the car. the readout is very small in the car and can be instantly removed if needed.

It also counters Laser. I got hit and saved just yesterday. It legally detects the laser and sends out a counter signal that registers "blank" on the police. Escort calls it "shifting" instead of "jamming". It is legal! As stated above, unless you have a countermove for laser, all a normal detector will do is tell you that your are caught.

I had the Valentine in the past. It's nice to have the arrows, but it can't counter laser.
