So, this has been really bugging me.
I'm rather new to the forums, so maybe I'm missing something.
In my desire to do some mods to my pre-LCI 525xi, I've been reading a lot of threads around the forums. Take this one for example:
https://5series.net/forums/topic/114...bruces-cables/
Installing the tail lights, connecting cables, etc - all pretty straight forward. I understand pretty much everything in the car is controlled by the onboard computer, and it requires some reprogramming of things to get it just how you want it (or for it to be even detected).
What I don't get is... Why is everyone else sending their car to someone else for those parts? I've seen parts where people have installed iPod adapters (another thing I was looking at) - install is straight-forward, but afterwards, you have to drop by the dealer and pay $100 to get it coded in? Wtf?
In looking around the DIY section.. I've seen several programs that let you read and send information to the car. Haven't looked too far into them yet, but surely something along those lines can be used to do the programming, can't it?
And if it can... then why is no one sharing the information on how to? Why isn't there some database of these things? For example, in the thread I linked to above, Anzafin simply states that he sent a file over to Bruce to do stuff with, and then flashed it back. No other mention on how to go about it yourself.
Not sure if I'm in the wrong crowd.. but with what I've been used to, opening memory dumps and editing instructions/opcodes/addresses/etc isn't that big of a deal.
