My E63 is optimized for 93 octane so putting in 91 is retarding the engine a little bit.
I guess that's my main question - are the E60 engines (especially the V8's & turbo I-6) and factory ECU mapping optimized for 93, as it is readilly available as premium in many places, or are they designed/optimized for 91? In essence, are we 91 users living with retarded timing simply because our standard fuel offerings dictate it? I guess this burning curiosity won't be quelched until I take the time to stop by Bob Jennings in North Hills for a before/after dyno...

I believe what Vegastrashed meant to say was that his car is optimized for 93 octane because of his software remap.
From what I understand, most cars from the factory have a range of tolerance built into their operational software to account for a variety of usage conditions from the consumer. This is where tuners write software that narrows those tolerances and try to extract more power based on better fuel..etc..
But I do understand your question about how our car's performance is measured as I'm also curious. Specifications aside, I had always believed that the same car in a different state that sells 93 octane can probably slightly out perform our car here in CA.
From what I understand, most cars from the factory have a range of tolerance built into their operational software to account for a variety of usage conditions from the consumer. This is where tuners write software that narrows those tolerances and try to extract more power based on better fuel..etc..

I just realize that is RON only. RON+MON is about 4 points less. So, 93 RON = 89 RON+MO.

Don't fret too much. 98 RON is the recommended, while 93 RON is the MINIMUM you should go before your car decides to take its angst out on you for being cheap lol.

I took a look at the pic again and 93 RON (89 RON+MON) is the MINIMUM. 98 RON = 94 RON+MON. So, I was right. E63 engine is indeed optimized for 94/93 RON+MON.
