I was at the dealer yesterday paying a social, that's right a social, visit to my SA. It seems that the reliability of my 550i is seriously compromising our relationship because it has not needed any service or repairs. I never see my old friend anymore. He did, however, try to sell me nitrogen for my tires. The cost is $70 one time, no matter how many times they need to be refilled and even includes my winter tires. The benefits mentioned in the brochure include better tire wear, better gas mileage, etc. Anyone have any experience with this??

If you maintain proper tire pressure all the time, you can rip the same benefits IMHO. Good luck on your decision. Cheers!

i understand it's better, but i dont think its really necessary... maybe if your storing the car for 30 years, but with the daily use of the tires, tires dont last long enough for the benefit... i go thru new tires every few years... other opinions?

I read something back about a year ago when nitrogen in tires was taking off and basically in the end the minimal difference in the end is so small that it isn't worth paying a buck to have your tires filled with nitrogen over air. To this day the only thing I've ever seen hyping nitrogen up as being so great is the people backing it.

Jeff,

Which dealer is that? I got the same brochure from Bloomfield BMW this week. Just wondering if you are going to the same place for service. Thanks.

Air is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases. The benefits of nitrogen in tire applications are numerous but each affords only minuscule benefits. Nitrogen is lighter (by 4%), is a larger physical molecule (theoretically less should leak out), doesn't hold as much moisture and doesn't attack rubber and metal like oxygen does.
If you had a collectible car that you are keeping for many years, maybe it makes sense.
