Modded sport steering E60
Hi there,
just wanted to share some images of my recent project of updating my steering wheel in my car. The standard sports steering wheel has a weak point in loosing the the thin rubber finish, I've seen it in many cars and mine started to fall off also. I figured it coul'dn't be that hard to replace so I bought a new part at the dealer and took my steering apart.
I have used these instructions and they it was just as described, pretty easy!
Removal & fitting of E60 lower trim cover - MY MOTIV BMW
Off course this thread is useless without pics, so here they are!
Before, you can see the lower trim is damaged due to wear...

I had the battery disconnected for about 15 minutes before I started to take things apart, didn't want a airbag in my face.

Here are the old and new parts together, I have chosen a different version because i don't want to repeat this in 2 years time. This one is actually from a 6 series, but fits perfectly!

As you can see in the picture above the new part doesn't have the M logo. I did want to keep the M so I have detached the black part with the logo. It was glued together with stuicky tape and I have transferred it to my new lower part.

And this is the end result, very happy with it!
First without the M logo

Then I took it all apart again to replace the part with the M badge in it.

Yes guys I pealed off all rubber coating on my wheel and on my heating control pannel trim and its nice shiny gloss black plastic under it and looks 100 ti es better than the protective rubber coating in my opinion also I see no problem the coatings on there for a reason but the respect we have for our cars will see no ill effect removing it mines been fine over a year never used any products on yhe exposed plastic just wet wipes that I keep in the car

I like that a lot, shame I just renewed mine with a black rubberised one.

The new ones you buy from the dealer are from black plastic, no more rubber coating on them
Had the same problem with mine, was going to get the 6 series trim but cash was a little low at this point, my car has the aluminium cube trim inside so decided to wrap it in silver carbon fibre, think it looks good
