My Ride: Plucked bmw.....
Default

It took me a bit longer, but my project is finally completed.

In the end I decided to swap only the front brakes, since I didn’t want to put any extra weight,
and also, the rear pads are in my case the same, as they are for E60 M5.

I must admit that I was positive surprise, when my stock calipers where taken off.
Because we found out, that they also have 2 pistons!
For all that time, I was sure that they are whit only one. I admit, I felt a little bit unpleasant for not knowing that.

As advised, I have also upgraded all brake lines whit SS lines and change the brake fluid with Castrol SRF.

In the end, I have managed to reduce the total weight on wheel, by installing lighter wheels (Styling M270), and with lighter tyres.

Front M5 disc.......….12,9kg (28,4lbs)
Front 550i disc....…. 12,5kg (27,5lbs)

Befor: Styling 94…… 12,4kg (27,3lbs)
Now: Styling 270…... 10,9kg (24lbs)

Befor: Bridgestone RE050... 245/40 R18…...11,5kg (25,3lbs)
Now: ContiSportContact 5....245/40 R18..…..9,7kg (21.3lbs)

And the braking performance.
It’s the same, as it was.
The only difference or advantage is, (and that was my main reason for swap),
when you break several times from higher speed, or on dynamic driving from hill, when the brake pedal doesn’t fall inside, and the braking efficiency stays the same.
For e.g.. on Autobahn, when braking from +200km/h, to +120km/h, or on trip across our Alpine passes.

Otherwise there is no difference, as some have claimed, that by upgrading to bigger BB or M5 brakes that the car stops quicker.

From my point of view, the only advantage of BB is, that by several hard braking, they don’t get overheat so quick as the stock one,
and by all that, the SS lines and a better-higher boiling point brake fluid have also an important role.

So in this summer. Stelvio pass, here I come !
