ipod retro kit

hi all,
have a 04,530i producted on april30,04. would like to instal Ipods, aux or mp3 player.
don't have a changer and don't know if it is prewired.
spoke with the dealer in ontario,canada. they have bulletin that says it is recomended to install ipods kit on late 05 production however they can install it on earlier models but there is no guarantee on idrive works fine without crashing.
now my quesiton is.
1. is any one took the risk and installed ipod on his 04 models? what was the expereince.
I beleive if the warranty passes they won't cover sw upgrades.
2. how much is the cost of this modual?( i have been qouted about $440 canadian on ipod kit and $800 for mp3 player with accessories)+ labour.
3. is there any alternative solution to have weather ipod or mp3 player at cheaper price.
4. I have heard on after market modual like dension 500 how is that and can it be installed on my model?

1) Yes, installed just fine. Did require the loss of the 6-disc changer but a good trade-off in my mind. Took a couple hours of labor plus parts, but have paper work at the office so will report price tomorrow. It is not a warranty issue, so never will be covered. Been 5 months now and have never crashed my iDrive...
2) Recall around $500 US but will have to reconfirm.
Can't help with 3 or 4, others will chime in...

During the initial release of the ipod kit there were some firmware limitations regarding installs on the 04 E60's. I believe this was addressed in subsequent software updates.
As I understand, all E60's are now compatible with the appropriate software upgrades.
In response to 3 and 4. You may want to look at the AUX In which will allow playback but no iDrive or steering wheel control of the ipod (other than volume). There are also a number of FM transmitter packages but you may not be happy with sound quality depending upon the number of FM stations in your area.
The Dension package essentially does the same thing as the ipod interface BMW sells. Cost is about the same IIRC.
