Default installing illuminated shifter..

hello everyone,
finally got my illuminated knob and have read through some trhead and posts on how to do this and for some reason cant make sense of what they are posting..

2 wires come from the knob.
my e60 is not pre wired for illuminated knobs.

I can tap into my menu button since my lighter does not work.. yes i checked the fuse.

its to my understanding the outer wire on each side of the menu button's harness are power wires.
*i am assuming now after reading it a few more times and based on the colors of the wires they describe one is the power, and the brown/black is the ground.. i feel stupid i overlooked this.

I tap the red + lead from the shifter into one of these outer wires and put the wire i tapped into back together with its other half.
Now, Will cutting the power wire short circuit the i drive or blow a fuse, should i disconnect battery, how about the actual push button?
i'd imagine cutting both power wires +/- at once would blow a fuse..?

the ground wire on the menu button is brown/black..?

here is a link i found for a diy write up.
i get lost when they mention the original cable and putting together the pins out of the back of the plastic connector..my shifter does not have pins so i have to tap into the wire with a connector.

am i overlooking something or missing something. it is such a simple task.
basically, i am questioning the color of the wires for power, and ground off the menu button and weather or not cutting one at a time will mess something up.

Hi

You must "tap" into these two wires , + ( power ) = Gray w. red line wire , and - ( ground ) = brown or brown/black wire.

Never cut in a + ( power ) wire when battery is connected !

ill take a look at the wires and colors.

even if the menu button is disconnected i should still disconect the battery? ive been dreading this for the fact of not having my sunroof work right again.. been there on done that on my e39 and still cant get the roof to work right.
