I heard the opposite, from a guy who had tried both - he preferred the Conti's for comfort, said the PS2s rode as hard as the RFs (on 18-inch rims). The PS2 is a better performance tyre though....

It might depend on the particular size of tyre but I'm delighted with the ride on my 245/40/18 and 275/35/18s...
IMHO definitely NOT like RF's!!!
YMMV

Ok I have just got a good quote for a set of Michelin PS2's. - ?578 fitted which seems to be pretty good. The offer is only valid in the new year -a bit weird but I can wait.
Now who wants to buy 4 Goodyear NCT5 runflats - 245/40/18Y ? Only 400 miles on them so like new !!
Colejl - you have the same tyre size as mine (for the fronts at least).

I've had both PS2s and Conti Sport Contact 2s on my 2004 545i SP, and can confirm that the SC2 does indeed ride noticeably quieter and smooter than the PS2 (with less impact noise over rough spots in the road), and also that the PS2 handles better than the SC2 when pushing really hard and has somewhat crisper steering than the CS2. I don't see how anyone who has really tried both could possibly say that the PS2 rides better- it simply does not! For me, the SC2 is the better tire. I dumped the PS2s after only a few thousand miles. For someone looking for the absolute best handling, though, I'd definitely recommend the PS2.

Do they make the Goodyear GS-D3's in the size for the 5er? Anyone have them?

I haven't tried the SC2's but my dealer had a 5 with 19's that he said rode really well...
But compared with the Dunlop DSST's I don't think there's a comparison!

Alot has been said abt how harsh the ride of RFT. But you will only truely appreciate it when you have a flat. It happened to me a few weeks back. I was on the way back home from the airport, it was raining, I had 4 adults in the car, on the highway when suddenly my iDrive flat tire warning came on. I was doing probably about 140kmph at that time. I slowed down to about 100kmph and continued driving back home cos' I was probably 20 mins away. There was no drama, car still very stable, but slowed when taking corners, best of all no need to stop and change tire.
I went to a neighborhood tire shop and they pulled out a 2" nail from the rear tire. iDrive don't tell you which tire is flat. Visually all 4 looked ok to me! Until I took out my pressure guage and found one with very low pressure. The hole was fixed with a plug (installed from inside of the tire). Since I was there I decided to give all my tires the full monty, balance, alignment, and all tires air changed to nitorgen gas. Found out that my rear alignment was out and had caused some uneven wear. Good thing I found out early before too much damge was done.
So now, I not sure when its time to change the tires, if I will change to non RFT. Before this incident I was certain to change to non RF. The convenience of not having to get down in the middle of the highway with the rain and trucks zipping by at high speed, think of the safety aspect, esp if my wife was driving, that's why the bells and whistles are worth it. The ride of my RFT is not too bad really. I can compromise and live with it for now. Hopefully when it is really tine to change my tires, the 2nd generation RFT would be better...and cheaper!

Here in SA BMW has instructed all tyre shops that they may not repair RF's on BMW's, because there is no way to tell how long and at what speed the tyre was used whilst flat.
