It seems as if your drive is one of the ones that works well with the power output of the car but in case you (or anyone else) is looking for the "perfect" hard drive to use with the E60, look no further than here:

So is there a list of flash drive that work, get recognized by idrive for both usb ports in the glovebox and the center console?
I have a sony 1gb that I had for years and this flash drive only works in the center console but not in the glove box. Also while in the center consol, it won't allow me to transfer the data to my cars memory..
I can certainly store music files from a CD though!

Hi.
My old laptop broke down (the display)
took the hdd and put it into an external cabinet. usb powered only. The hdd is a hitachi 60GB normal ide.
took out the pictures and the music.
And then I decided, why not try it in the car.
I formatted it with FAT32 (important)
used this program in dos-mode: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?download.htm
this command: fat32format x:
(if you got win98 you dont need this dosprogram)
put some music on it and plugged it in the car.
It works like a charm, much faster than my rotten usb stick. And bigger
Cheers!

I've heard that since the car bounces around a lot etc, it's not good for the HDD and can damage it...Thats why I just use my 16GB USB stick. I've been more than happy with it
