I have a VA registered vehicle and passed inspection based on the tint laws here in VA. When I was in Rockaway Beach, N.Y. about 4 months ago, a cop attempted to give me a ticket for my tints. He said that my windows were too dark and illegal in N.Y. I then told him that I was a Virginia resident and my vehicle was registered in the Commonwealth of Virgina. He told me that it does not matter, my tints were still illegal in N.Y. I then pointed to a N.Y. registered vehicle across from me and asked the cop "if that vehicle was missing its front plate or had it mounted on the dashboard, who you give them a ticket"? He said "of course I would, because that's illegal here in N.Y. as well". I then said "you would you give a ticket to a driver whose vehicle is registered in Florida, where they are required to have only have 1 plate mounted on their car? Vehicle traffic laws vary from state to state, and I am just passing thru N.Y., my vehicle equipment is not governed by N.Y.S. traffic laws." He then said "ok, I'll give you a break on the tints, but your gettin' a summons for driving without a license".

i thought tints in the rear had no requirements? or is that only here in california?
I mean come on, most of us here are getting lucky with 35% front when the legal is no tint (a tint shop told me that the sites are wrong and that the legal CA tint is now NO TINT as of 09). Seriously I can't complain hehe...
One of my cars has 5% rear, and a double layer front sides (which turns out to be roughly 25%) and an illegal 9" 4% visor tint lol.

cop told me 80% of light needed to pass thorough windows. the meter read 20%.
Fight it. Plead not guilty and I'm 100% sure the judge will dismiss the ticket.

Hey, I believe it's the other way. Whatever number is how much the light emits through the tint. Meaning only 20% of light passes throught the tinted windows.

so has anyone successfully fought a tint ticket in nyc recently? can i remove the tint and not have to pay $180 for these effin tickets? ridiculous, i understand the reason for the law but it still sucks. the cop gave me 2 tickets, one for the front 2 windows and one for the rear 2 windows. bitch.
I do not think you can actually fight for tint tickets. Just pay for them as it is the extra cost for you to take when you decided to tint the windows. I tinted the windows since my first car(always 35% all around, then 50% all around for my 545i) and got many tint tickets which should be $40 or $50. I did not bother and just paid for the fine.
