My Ride: A Car faster than yours.....
Default

Hey guys. I want to thank iceman for letting me dyno his car. I got a chance to run the car pretty hard today (18 back to back to back runs).

Runs 1-5: stock with AFE intake. Ambient 78, IAT at idle 121. Max 256whp.

Runs 6-8: stock w/ K&N filter. Ambient 79m IAT at idle 82. Max 267whp.

Runs 9-11: stock w/ K&N filter + RPi V1 scoop. Ambient 80. IAT at idle 82. Max 264whp.

Runs 12-15: stock w/ K&N filter + RPi V1 scoop modified. Ambient 80. IAT at idle 81. Max 267whp. Max gain + 2whp and +5wtq.

I was pretty upset about the numbers so we will be doing more development work on the E60 scoop. Those of you who have purchased the scoop already will receive a FREE replacement when we release V2 for the 550. Our goal was to get a minimum of 5whp gain.

ICEMAN316 is here with me right now at RPI. Suffice it say, AFE for any car is going to lose power. First the M5 a couple of weeks ago and now the 550i.

AFE are a bunch of crooks. When I first installed the AFE CAI, I thought the car felt slower. Not until doing a dyno run today did I realize how true it was and how much power was lost. Check out the mid-range.

Wow. Excellent work, and thanks for sharing. It is really good to see some numbers to back up (OR NOT) the claims of aftermarkets suppliers.

Even feels slow in my I6 M54 530i, I really liked and preferred my K&N filter, also i feel that all low end-mid range power/torque was significantly lossed at least 10-15 whp. Sound is negligible, really can't tell to much of a noise difference compared to my K&N filter.

I don't have AFE but I had dual cone filter intake setup before and my 535i just felt sluggish at low rpms! There was an obvious loss of low end torque. I gave it a week to adjust and still the same. Now i'm happier with my stock airbox! IMHO, intakes are a waste of money unless you plan on drag racing or tracking your car. Those who benefit from this mod are the ones who have a heavily modded engine.

Aw man! I was keeping my hopes up for the RPI scoops. I think the N54 motor can greatly benefit from it. I'm just waiting for some solid numbers from customers who have tried it. Keep us posted on V2 for the E60s.

You are very right, I feel slow off the line, so i doubt it will help me in drag racing, I will put the stock airbox in with the K&N and report on how the car reacts. thanks

K&N should help a bit since their filter is much better than stock but don't expect a miracle in gains. I would still buy it for the sound! LOL!
