I am wondering whether or not getting a clear bra for my new E60. I had plenty of rock chips on my E39. My question to those that have it is: Do they really stay 'invisible' after washing and waxing and do they get pitted with the rocks that would normally pit the paint or headlamps?

I hate how clear bra looks.... but I'm a careful driver, so I don't get rockchips. 12,000 highway miles, and I don't have a chip anywhere.

From what I know.... the darker your car, the more noticable a clear bra is. For example, if you have white or titan silver... you'll never see the bra. But on black or Blue, it's very noticable.

It's barely noticeable on my black 545i. Well worth the protection it provides from rock chips (and no matter how careful you are, it is impossible to completely avoid them).

The dealer wants $595 for the 'stone-x' 3M product. 5 year warranty. Seems high to me. Would a tint shop be an alternative - and do they even have the talent? Car is Silver-grey.

$595 is a fair price. This is a very specialized service and you need to pay for an experienced installer.

I think it depends on your area. The best I could find was $899... So I went out and talked the place down from $1000 who offered better coverage (headlights, etc...) and got mine installed for $899 including the tax.

Chances are the tint shop is where the dealer farms it out to. Most places you call will either claim to do BMWs for "such-and-such" a dealer, or whatever. I found the place who does the BMW dealers' cars in my area as well as Ferrari and Maserati of Washington's cars. Good installers.

Make sure you get the headlights covered. Every place has different templates, coverage, guarantees, etc...

I say yay PLUS a Full Colgan bra with emblem cut-out.

I've seen that the clear bra leaves some areas uncovered.

I know, i know when it rains i'll take off her bra and let it dry!

Hmmm... I wonder why my car is as perfect as the day I bought it then? Just waxed it again today, and paid special attention to the hood area. 12,000+ miles now... and still not even a HINT of a rock chip or scratch.

I say just don't follow cars closely, and certainly don't follow trucks.

If you want to spend $600 for some clear plastic, go for it.

U got lucky dude. It is theoretically impossible to spot every pebble on the road at 80 mph on the highway. :'( Also the quality of the roads where you live matter, if you drive on mountain roads also, etc. My GS400 has plenty of rock chips, and I drove it pretty carefully all these years, but CA roads are known to suck.
