Well I took the leap as well, it seems easy enough and I DID have a spare couple of minutes......so, I removed the charcoal filter, vacuumed out a bit of debris from the housing, and....well so far there is nothing else, I really only had a couple of spare minutes as I stated, and I have to wait until morning to see (or feel) if there is a difference at all. But I will let you all know!

Now get a K&N Filter to replace the stock air filter.

The K&N filter is a tad louder than stock at higher revs.

So I drove the car this morning without the charcoal filter.....WOW!!! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!! Nah, not really it felt a little smoother, perhaps a bit louder, but nothing earth-shattering. Still increased volume is increased volume (air volume that is).

I installed a K&N filter from Amazon for $28, removed the charcoal filter, and cleaned the filter box. In normal driving, absolutely no difference. In spirited driving, the engine is more eager to pull at mid and high RPMs. Whether at idle or redline, the primary advantage is smoother operation. I was unable to detect any difference in intake noise during acceleration runs. A very inexpensive mod.

Not sure if someone else posted this already (I did a search and didn't see it), but my 2008MY 550i did not have any metal clips attaching the charcoal filter to the top intake piece. Instead it was heat melted on. That is, the corners were slightly melted to keep it on. No clips at all. Fortunately, this has the advantage of not worrying about clips falling down into the engine compartment or getting sucked into the engine. Unfortunately, it won't be as easy putting it back on if need be. Either way, I now have a little extra piece of mind knowing that I have more power
hehe

Lomag,
Yes it does - you dont always feel the difference though for some reason - depends on the density of the air and temperature of your area.... My car sometimes performs poorly with temperatures in the upper 40 celcius (typical Arabian Gulf weather)
In Winter - I get the best performance feel of all year!![Smile](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/smile.gif)

Removed charcoal filter from my 545i last nite (has K&N, Remus cat-back exhaust, and Sprint Booster). Been running half mix of 91+100 octane. Definate difference felt. I think with a free-flowing filter (recently re-oiled) and less-restrictive exhaust, a more pronounced difference is felt. Gotta love freebie mods!
