My Ride: no longer driving an E60.
I drive a E92 335i now
I've witnessed the installation.
You just need to take the central wood part off and than you have to remove the central air-blowers (and don't know how it's called) above the radio (unplug the wire), and then you have two screws and you can take out the radio. Then there is a plug connected to the rear of the radio as discribed in Iceman's PDF, you need to take the wires from the AUX-kit connector and add them to the existing connector. Be carefull you put them in the correct place there are some minuscul numbers on the connector.
However before you do this, your dealer hast to configure your Idrive anyway, Installing the aux-kit hardware takes max 15 minutes for a BMW mecanic, the rest of the labourcist is the programming. So is it worth to mess around yourself?

Strangest thing; I got a cable with a 3.5mm stereo jack on either end,
and it don't work..
Not with a discman, I-pod or portable DVD player.
Not in my E60 or in the X3..
I tried 2 different cables aswell.
Hmm... What am I missing here?

Hi All
Sorry I haven't been posting for a few days - family health problems...
EBMCS03, I agree with others that it is probably better for your dealer to retrofit the Aux Input for you - but for anyone who's interested, here's how to remove the Trims and CCC Unit (including preliminary items)

5145380___Removing_RH_Strip_on_Instrument_Panel.pdf
6131079___Removing_Hazard_Warning_Switch.pdf
Also, I would suggest getting these sets of tools as they will enable you to remove grills, switches etc. from all types of BMW and other car I guess.

My dealer installed it and it showed up in the menu after the initialization. Once I picked it up it dissappeared from idrive... After another initialization it is now there again and remains there, but no sound. I tried different cables and adapters... Nothing...
Dealer is checking with Munich tomorrow...
