This turned out to be the wrong trim part. Its too big, its got 3 holes, no mic grills and its covered in fabric and not plastic/abs like the current trim piece. So it looks like I need part 7 now. However the part numbered 7 in the diagram is not listed in realoem as a part for my car.

Any clues?

The BMW sales person thought I was mad ordering something that was not 'compatible' with my car. They use words like compatible as though I'm ordering a different engine or something.
