I don't know to be honest but its the only one called push button instead of a switch hence my hopes on that one.
I'm thinking that the SOS button is also a momentary contact closure type switch as well...

Well, if everything else fails, a latching relay is ?3.73 from Maplins...

Yes but how do I switch the relay on? And Rudy you may be right about the SOS button. Infact in the entire car the only push buttons I could see were the map and interior light switches. I could use the drivers map light switch and connect the passengers map light switch to switch on both map lights. But don't really want to do that as yet.

FYI, I don't think even the interior and map light switches are the type you're looking for...

You connect the microphone or whatever circuit is meant to be on/off to the relay switch contacts, then wire the relay set/reset coil with a "soft" button connected to a +12V terminal. Give me half an hour, and I'll put together a wiring diagram

That's what I mean...

Anyone know the part number of a good button-relay_diagram.png

Pushing the button cycles through opening and closing switch (or rather, connecting the NC and NO relay outputs to whatever is connected to C)

That looks like a plan!! Thanks dlevi67. Now to find a good 12V source.

I have realised that depending on how the latch relay works, the circuit above may actually not work (it may continuously alternate between set and reset as long as you keep the button pressed, resulting in a nice buzzing sound but little else). So, here is a modified diagram with a couple more bits to resolve that problem.

Anyone know the part number of a good button-relay_diagram_2.png

The components needed are:

Miniature latch relay (Maplin N38AW)
10 uF capacitor (Maplin VH07H - please note it's a polarised component; the pin marked + should be connected to the button)
10 kohm resistor (Maplin M10K)

A piece of matrix board (Maplin N97CF) may be handy to keep these three tidy and easy to wire up

The pin numbers refer to the Maplin relay, so if you get something else, change as necessary. The capacitor value has been calculated based on the relay spec to provide an appropriate impulse width (~2 ms @ 8.5 v or higher), however... from theory to practice many things are different. I would suggest that you buy a 4.7 uF and a 22 uF as well (at the princely cost of ?0.12 each) and then see. If there is no relay action at all, increase the capacitor size; if the relay buzzes, decrease it.

Thanks a lot for this. I'm still waiting for my switch to arrive. Bought an old one off ebay that came with the plug and connectors too. That way I can cut my losses in case this plan doesn't work.
I was anyway thinking of using a matrix board because the mute function will also need a few components to make the make/break pop free so all this will go on to a matrix board quite well. Plus I don't want to cut any original wires so will need to mount some pcb sockets as well for the original mic connector. When I get down to it I'll post some news on progress.

What will be the part number for the Grey trim piece that will house the two mics (voice + handsfree), the SOS and a NEW sunroof button that I want to install. I have a Grey interior but no sunroof. RealOEM is quite confusing to say the least.

RealOEM.com Home => 520D => VEHICLE TRIM => INTERIOR BODY TRIM PANEL
