You need to take off trim around the head unit, take the head unit out, plug in the supplied harness, plug car cables into harness, same with the monitor and thats it.
No coding required no cables need modification.
If you send the company above an email they can send you a pdf with instructions.

I'm thinking about getting the XCarLink and was thinking of throwing in the rear view camera too...but looking at it on their page. its like built into the license plate light slot...so you have to replace the housing. For me I have upgraded full led license plate housings and if i got that it would be like super bright on one side, not super bright on the other. For anyone else you would probably have led light on one side and halogen yellowish on the other.

these issues pretty much turned me off of the idea. just something to think about.

Actually you can get a camera off ebay, which slots into the boot handle and you keep both your licence plate lights
Modmynav.com sell the camera too.
Or just buy an LEd bulb for the other licence plate light, it costs less than 2-3 dollars.

QUESTION:

Could the output from a (regular) Garmin unit be patched into the idrive display in a similiar fashion ?

The unit has an RGB input which is designed for connecting GPs units. In theory if your GPS can do RGB out should work.
But once you connect an iPhone or other phone with GPS that becomes redundant.

This sounds like a very clever and useful mod. The OEM BMW sat nav is not known to be the best anyway so plugging in an aftermarket nav (iphone or other) does make a lot of sense. Even more so when you work out how much extra £$£$ it would have cost to have OEM nav as a factory option !! So in a way I'm quite satisfied my car came without factory Sat Nav now that I've found this mod .
