Alex, I think you dont quite understand the Dension Gateway as opposed to the ACM. I have the Dension Gateway and the ACM installed now and they are not competing products but instead complimenting ones.
whats the point of having both ACM and Dension Gateway if ACM can do everything - play music & video from USB/iPod ?

Just the ACM will not give you USB, you still need to buy the USB attachment for the ACM. The Dension uses the MOST cable to transmit the audio to the HU the USB-ACM uses the AUX-IN. If sound quality is important to you there is no comparision between the Dension and the USB-ACM.

With the USB-ACM you still can't get the iPOD video to the screen, with the Dension you can. Besides up until very recently the USB-ACM didn't even exist.

Nicke60gre i would like to ask you about the recent ACM Version (level2) along with the USB interface. Do i have to reprogram the car to an authorized bmw dealer to make it work?

No you don't have to if you have Aux-in installed. Otherwise, you need the Aux-in retrofit (not necessarily to the dealer, there are many other places to go)

...You can move to the next and previous video file or audio track via the steering wheel up/down buttons, so I assume, it will work with the voice input as well, although I forgot to check, but for viewing pictures it works only by rotating the I-drive knob, or by the slide show feature. I like it! Now I need to find some time to go and have the AUX input retrofitted and if the sound is good enough for my fussy ears, then I'll be in love with it
Very nice, this is something I'd like to add to my car as well.

I have a 2005 ACM unit (65500417619) but no cable. Looking at the complexity of the cable, I'm a bit worried to connect it myself. I'm an electrical engineer, I do not fear some soldering and building some wiring looms and I do have WDS as a help, but still...

Now I have a couple of questions and I hope they have not been asked here before:

1) If I install an ACM module, what does it take to use the video input channels that are normally used for the sideview cameras? Is it a standard PAL/NTSC signal or is it a proprietary interface? Anybody knows?

2) I know the cable connects to the M-ASK, I-drive controller and CAN. What exactly does it do with the M-ASK? What happens if the M-ASK is not connected?

3) How do I know if my 2005 ACM (65500417619) will work with the ACM-USB retrofit?

Kind regards,
Tim

P.S. I have a 2007 LCI car with AUX, and (unfortunately) no USB audio...

Another option for me would be to swap my MULF2 with a MULF2high. But I think the chance is not so high that that would work. Anyone tried that before?

If you dont have the 2 cables that are used in the ACM then I'm wondering how successful you are going to be in installing it. The cable is probably the most important part of the install. Also do you have the CAN BUS interface that goes with the ACM?

The interface is a standard PAL/NTSC signal but the ACM uses a BMW plug which you must modify for the aftermarket cameras.

The unit is connected to the M-ASK only for the AUX-IN, connected to the iDrive controller for the CAN and the screen for the video output.

The older ACM units will not work with the USB because you wont have that option on your screen.

There is now a USB - Audio retrofit from BMW or you can look at the Dension Gateway that gives you USB.

For those with the older generations of the ACM, you don't need to buy the entire ACM kit to get the latest version. Just buy

65 50 0 441 374 151 Euro
61 35 0 441 373 153 Euro

And that's it. Requires some small wiring modifications to supply power to the new USB module but that will save you money and time from buying or reinstalling the whole d*mn thing again which is a PITA.

Hi Nick,

I think that the plug for this USB socket is the item 5 from the part list bellow. There you can see an USB hub too.

And here some variations from the USB sockets:
