OK - just got an email from my dealer for info I requested regarding the USB interface retrofit for the ACM (Accessory Control Module)
This is not the ordinary USB you find next to the aux in on LCI's...this is specifically connected to the ACM (which obviously is a prerequisite) and allows USB connection of a hard drive, USB sticks and even Ipod !
What's the big deal ? It plays VIDEO, MUSIC, PICTURES ! all via the idrive of course. Imagine connecting a 320GB Western Digital Passport loaded with mpeg (1,2,4 - divx) playing movies. On the ACM it is well known that leaving unconnected a specific pin allows on the move video playing.
Requirement: Hard drive must be formatted FAT or FAT32.
For info a ACM costs 450euros, a USB interface for the ACM 260euro --> dealer quoted me 950euro ($1450) for complete installation.
All part numbers are included within the pdf.
This contistutes my ipod interface defunkt since this thing can play music from a hard drive but even an ipod on it's own (non itunes transferred). Might be going up for sale soon...
Check out the pdf (in German - but you will get the idea) :

No Way?!?!?!
So let me get this straight...
If I get the ACM... Plus the USB ACM Interface... It can play videos directly off the USB device, without using a video interface? (like navtv2go).
All I need is these two parts and dealer programming and I would be all set in that department to use all the features u mentioned?
Also, control is obvious I-drive oriented?
Please tell me this is so! =) Man... I want!

My Ride: 2006 550i Black Sapphire/ Black leather, NAV, Sports Pkg, Active Steering, Shadow Trim, PDC, Heated Seats/Wheel, Logic 7 Sound, 6 Disc Changer, Blue Tooth, Comfort Access/Seats, ACS Aluminum Pedals, Bi-Xenon lamps and MTEC 2X Super White Foglights
This sounds great, but I am concerned that this will not work for US models. Apparently non-US models can watch video on their screens with a simple mod, where US models have a different screen that can't read the formats needed. I think you would still need a device like NAV TV for this to work, but I would love to be wrong.

hmm..don't know anything about that TBone
This is an official retrofit buddy, you should be good - Give the part numbers to your dealer and if they give you a date for install there's your answer . It's being released as from May 2008 - so this very new and possibly not all dealers are up to speed.

ACM >= NavTV
You wont need the NavTV if you have the ACM. The ACM is BMW's own solution to displaying video on the OEM screen. And yes the ACM works on US cars. So in other words because ACM itself is the Video sending device the USB feature is an add-on to the ACM and will provide additional inputs to the ACM. Currently the ACM can accept DVT,DVD and cameras.

Yes it seems it plays everything, even 2,5" external DVD drives connected via USB ...supported by external power of cousre, ie sig lighter, I don't think power via USB can make an external DVD drive work
