I was told that by a local mechanic that the clutch replacement job on the 545i required some specialty tools. He refused to do the job and I am refusing to pay 1200$ in labor at the BMW shop. I consider myself an intermediate to advanced tech. So besides the clutch alignment/centering tool are there any other specialty tools needed?

Mine was replaced by non BMW Indy shop two year ago and as far as I know he did not use any special tools to do the job but mine still works good and have no issues

My mechanic knows BMW's like the back of his hand but I know he works on other cars so I don't see why not. If you trust the mechanic let him do the work I don't think Bimmers have a "special" clutch.

Yea i Didnt think it was a "special clutch" just thought maybe some special tools were required dis/assembly. I worked it saturday and had my tranny out on the shop floor in about 4 hours. Could prob do it in half the time now. I was surprised how easy it came out. Half the time is spend removing covers and heat shielding. Now waiting for my new clutch to arrive .

Which clutch did you go with? It took me about 5-6.5 hours to get my automatic transmission removed and on the floor next to the car and I too now feel I could do it in 3-4 hours if need-be. I expect the manual transmission would be slightly easier to remove.
