Yep, it's painted.
1/ Automotive Primer
2/ Professional Rust-oleum flat black
3/ Ultra clear acrylic (satin)
I did it to match the Shadowline trim around side windows (sport pkg)

ehhh not to bash but I would do it differently. I would either go for the all black look by painting the trim and slits black or paint the slits black and have the trim painted body color. but to all his own.

The matte black grill surrounds Look Excellent. I did that with my 95 M3 and will do the same with my 545i. I don't like the chrome slats that come on the 545 grill, so if the chrome layer is thick enough I may try to brush it, otherwise I will try spraying it with a matte or satin clear coat.
