Sorry for the ignorance Iceman, but what happens to the remaping if a new CIP version is installed? Would it over-right the remaping?
Thanks

The CIP usually doesn't overwrite the chip, only the CCC and it's systems. But IF there is a content in the new software that BMW installs that is for the chip, then the settings are overwritten and you need the free re-remap...

NOT TRUE, most CIPs do not include engine management module updates so the tuned engine map is not in any geopardy

Well, I'm not an expert but what BMW people told me is that every CIP upgrading is a (quite long) process that involves a TOTAL re-writing of the software package. In other words, it's not a selective process; it is not possible to upload only some part of software package. And even if not every CIP version involves modifications in the engine management, nevertheless EVERY CIP version includes ALL the part of the total package, including, of course, software management. For this reason, a CIP upgrading will cancel all the older software with the new one, even if some parts of it are not modified from previous releases.
Anybody can confirm?

On a CIP disc there is new software for the CCC/MAS-K, including the connected modules.
There CAN be new software for the DME chip too, but usually it isn't!!
If it isn't, then you don't lose the remap, because it doesn't get overwritten by anything. It only gets overwritten and therefore deleted, if there is an update of the DME chips software included in the package on the disc.
All software that has new updates on the disc, will get totally overwritten, what is a quite long process. But those parts that don't have new software on the disc stay with what they currently have.

If re-mapping is so easy and has such benefits for performance and even fuel consumption, why doesn't BMW do the upgrade in the first place? It would give them a significant competitive advantage.
Are they worried about wear, e.g. on the transmision, and hence warranty claims (in which case we should worry too). Or is there some other reason?
