530i idrive software upgrade

Hello.
I have a 2004 530i with SMG. However when I picked up my car, I was most disappointed in the functions available on my idrive compared to what is generally available. I do not have sat nav (which I am not bothered about really) but would like added functionality such as trip computer stuff such as additional mpg monitoring as I like to check my journey mpg as well as the mpg for the tankfull. There are many more options available as well.
My question is this, does anyone know if the software can be upgraded and how I could go about achieving this.
Lastly, although my car is reasonably powerfull, are there any performance enhancements that I can carry out to make it faster/more economical e.g chipping?
