Now what is it missing or how is it different from the new '3rd generation' diesels described on

It seems that the 'nth generation' refers more to the 'common rail system'
- piezo injectors are called out explicitedly on the 3rd generation 3.0 diesels released in the E90 and more recently announced in the E60
- however, I can't find them mentioned in any descriptions of 2nd generation common-rail
- any most other things common-rail-related look more or less the same (they both operate at max 1600bar etc.)
So, could it be the injectors?
