The vinegar worked a treat ! No doubt the alcohol would have had the same effect.
Yeah, I've done that before in the past, but only with cheap crappy cars. I wouldn't do it to my E60, especially as the metal arm is pretty much designed to resist such a bend. If you took a cross-section view of it, you'd see a squared U shape. Specifically designed for strength. Here's a shot I took with my phone as I was cleaning it with vinegar. Not sure if you can make out the shape.

It doesn't need to be 'bent' only 'teased' just kind of resisting the natural springiness in the arm and teasing it around a bit, not forcing it or actually bending it. It's amazing what that will do for thie wiper 'chatter'. Sometimes just fitting a new rubber blade will cure it though before this more hands on approach.
I tried it on my E61 today and the arm will move a fraction. I actually induced the chatter by bending mine, and them bent it back a little.
Anyway, it's an anoying as hell problem and sometimes dangerous, because I have know poeple turn-off their wipers and use the intermitently to avoid the chatter when they should be on full.

The thing is you should never clean your wiper blades because you tear down the thin graphite layer. I'd suggest getting new ones and you'll be fine.
