Sounds like the alcohol would do the same thing as the vinegar (basically give the blades a damn good clean). Considering that the only alcohol we have in the house is a bottle of Baileys, I'll give the vinegar a try

This is such a classic problem with a quick, cheap classic fix.
A technician friend taught me the fix and I did it to plenty of friend cars - and my own - to good effect.
You need to bend the metal wiper arm (not the blade) in the direction of 'chatter'. This will allow the rubber wiper edge to flip back and forth as intended. The chatter is caused by the rubber wiper edge leading in the wrong direction.
The metal wiper arm (from the motor to the blade) gets deformed by hot / cold weather, mechanical wear etc and just needs a slight bend in the oposite direction. Do this with a wrench, but just 'tease' the arm, don't force it because it only needs 0.3-0.4mm adjustement. I promse this will fix it for good. Also wrap some cloth around the wrench teeth to avoid scratching the paint from the wiper arm.
This link explains it much better than me....Just google 'Wipper Chatter'

The vinegar worked a treat ! No doubt the alcohol would have had the same effect.
Yeah, I've done that before in the past, but only with cheap crappy cars. I wouldn't do it to my E60, especially as the metal arm is pretty much designed to resist such a bend. If you took a cross-section view of it, you'd see a squared U shape. Specifically designed for strength. Here's a shot I took with my phone as I was cleaning it with vinegar. Not sure if you can make out the shape.

Get yourself some Isopropyl Alcohol some chemist sell it etc, onto a clean cloth and wipe your blades with it, Give your glass a good clean with a quality glass cleaner an maybe apply Nanolex Urban Glass sealant www.nanolex.de

I was diligent in "treating" the windshield shortly after delivery only to have the chatter start days later.
My dealer indicated that Rain X was causing the chattering on my vehicle shortly after delivery (this type of wiper blade is not compatible). The dealer GM said he had the same issue on his 7 Series and later learned Rain X and BMW blades don't mix...
A good cleaning of the glass and blades regularly makes all the difference.
