It only occurs on the bigger BMWs like the 5, 6 and 7 Series, the E39 was the same.
I've seen other cars built like that too e.g. Peugeot 206, Renault Clio, also on the previous Mercedes S Class too.

My Ride: 2006 530xi. Deep green with beige interior. 6 speed manual. Premium package.
After reading this post I went out and looked at the wipers and I must think different because it looks to me like the wipers are set for RHD - the bigger wiper is on that side

My Ride: F11 520d white, auto, professional sat-nav with internet, variable damper control, sports steering wheel, extended lighting, retractable tow bar, wing mirrors with dimming & folding, full electric seats with memory & lumber adjustment, etc.
Being new to BMW I wrote to BMW UK over this and the lack of 12v power sockets in the rear & trunk. They wrote back stating that the wipers conform to EC legislation, or in other words get stuffed.
